An adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has warned of legal action after former interim government chief and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was heckled at New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport, media reports said.
Zahed Ur Rahman described those who heckled Yunus as supporters of the disbanded Awami League.
Addressing a press briefing, Rahman warned that such activities would not be tolerated.
“I want to tell the Awami League terrorists, who are spread in different parts of the world, that their activities of such sorts won't go unchallenged,” Rahman said.
Yunus heckled at New York airport
Yunus was heckled by a group of Bangladeshi expatriates at JFK Airport on October 12 amid political tensions over his tenure as head of Bangladesh's interim government.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate had arrived from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight and was seen in a wheelchair as protesters confronted him while he was leaving the airport.
In a video circulating on social media, demonstrators shouted, “You are a terrorist,” and accused him of undermining democracy in Bangladesh.
Some protesters also blamed him for deaths and alleged abuses during his administration and shouted, “Go back.”
Security personnel escort Yunus away
Security personnel and associates escorted Yunus away from the confrontation. Media reports said he was briefly taken back inside the terminal.
The protesters were reported to include individuals linked to the Awami League and its US-based affiliates.
