At least nine people, including two children, were killed in a shooting in a residential neighbourhood in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, according to media reports.

The suspected shooter was among those found dead inside a house at 722 Perry Street, Erie News Now reported.

According to local media reports, two women were found dead on the road, while the bodies of the remaining victims were recovered from the house.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah, quoted by CBS News, said investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and cautioned against speculation about the motive.

“Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, I will not discuss the specific details of what our officers encountered today. Our investigators are working diligently as we speak to establish the full circumstances of what occurred. We will not speculate about a motive or any information that could compromise this investigation,” Lorah said.

Police have not released the identities of the victims or disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.

Authorities say there is no ongoing threat

The City of Erie government and Mayor Daria Devlin issued a statement expressing grief over the incident and assuring residents that the situation had been contained.

“We understand that this news brings deep shock and sorrow to our residents, and we want to assure the public that the situation has been contained. The shooter is deceased, and there is no ongoing threat or danger to the public at this time,” the statement said.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by tonight’s tragedy,” it added.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also expressed condolences over the loss of lives and offered state support to the affected community.

“I’ve spoken with Mayor Devlin and offered my Administration’s full support following the tragic mass shooting in Erie last night — killing nine of our fellow Pennsylvanians. My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community,” Shapiro wrote on X.
