Warsaw: Polish authorities have arrested and charged three gay rights activists for hanging the LGBTQ flag off statues in Warsaw, the national capital, while protesting the policies of President Andrzej Duda.
The activists desecrated three statues- the Warsaw mermaid, astronomer Copernicus and Jesus Christ.
Police charged them with desecration of statues and hurting religious sentiments of the Polish public, reports said.
Images showed the statues dressed in pink facial masks bearing the anarcho-queer symbol.
Activists said they were protesting the anti-homophobic stance of the President, who was re-elected on 13 July, beating Rafal Trzaskowski, his competitor by a slim margin.
Duda angered the LGBTQ community by promising to ban same-sex marriages and adoption and passing a rule on the same, during his election campaign.
He was heard saying the LGBT ideology was far more destructive than communism, inviting criticism from several corners.
To make matters worse for the community, Poland does not recognise homosexual unions. LGBTQ couples are also legally not allowed to adopt children.
