OUR MISSION

Carbon removal, alongside emissions reductions, is absolutely essential to preserving a stable climate. We’re focused on addressing the knowledge, policy, and ambition gaps that are holding us back from a carbon removal ecosystem that delivers real progress on climate change.

Leadership from European countries - including the UK - is critical, both for ensuring that carbon removal can reach the scale necessary to achieve global climate goals, and for ensuring that a progressive vision of carbon removal can emerge that is not dominated by fossil or other corporate interests.

Europe needs carbon removal in order to:

1. Meet its net-zero targets
2. Address its historical emissions that are already in the atmosphere causing warming

Carbon removal needs Europe because no other region has both the financial muscle and the political will to scale crucial new climate solutions. Europe needs carbon removal, and carbon removal needs Europe, but neither has a dedicated and honest voice speaking for carbon removal on behalf of the climate. Carbon Gap will be that voice.

THE ROLE

Carbon Gap is a dedicated independent carbon removal advocate in Europe, with the largest number of dedicated policy professionals, located in our Brussels based EU Carbon Removal Policy Centre and selected European capitals, including London. We have quickly established ourselves as a leading figure in Carbon Dioxide Removal Policy advocacy as well as being a beacon in the scientific research and analysis which underpin our policy positions and interventions.

Since our launch at COP26, we have published a series of influential papers, our experts have been featured in the mainstream and climate media, and our Policy Directors have been selected as advisors to the policy making establishment, the European Economic and Social Committee. This is just the beginning of a decades-long mission to make Europe a global carbon removal leader and deliver the capacity necessary to meet Europe’s net zero commitment.

We are continuing to build out a team of experienced carbon removal policy professionals and are looking for individuals with a passion for climate policy to help make our vision of safe, effective and socially responsible carbon removal a reality. If you have the ambition to match our mission and are seeking a platform to scale your personal impact in a high empowerment and high accountability environment, we want to talk to you.]

You will work collaboratively with Carbon Gap colleagues and carbon removal ecosystem partners to contribute towards the development of carbon removal requirements and policy positions. You will have the opportunity to engage directly with policymakers and influencers, developing your own expertise and profile in climate and carbon removal policy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

You will contribute to Carbon Gap’s UK policy programme. This includes:

• Policy analysis (80%):

1. Reading, reviewing, and synthesising scientific and policy research related to carbon removal, and developing relationships with experts that you can rely on.
2. Producing research insights and written products such as research reports, consultation responses, blogs and articles, related to carbon removal policy, regulatory, and innovation activities in the UK, and working with the communications team to share these insights.
3. Conducting high-level, quick, and in-depth analysis of policy, politics, and industry trends.

• Policy engagement strategy (20%):

1. Building relationships with external stakeholders and partners, including parliamentarians and the civil service, as well as NGOs and researchers.
2. Delivering specific policy recommendations and educational briefings on carbon removal policy in persuasive written formats.
3. Facilitating and participating in high impact meetings, events and workshops with stakeholders to advance the policy agenda for carbon removal.
4. Contributing to Carbon Gap’s media engagement efforts to raise the profile of the organisation and our mission, including issuing of press statements.

YOUR PROFILE

You are committed to climate action. You don’t need to be an expert in carbon removal, but the idea that we can take carbon from the atmosphere, stop climate change, and begin repairing the damage we’ve done to the planet excites you.

You’re comfortable with new material. Diving into a new field, learning new acronyms and concepts, and digesting scientific papers doesn’t scare you. You want to become a master of new ideas and concepts.

You make complicated things simple. You have a knack for understanding big, complex issues and distilling them into what your audience needs to know, especially through writing.

You obsess about the bigger picture. You’re not satisfied unless your work leads to tangible results, and always want to know how what you’re doing now serves the long-term goal.

You’re a relationship-builder at heart. You proactively make and maintain genuine connections, always looking for ways to help, and work well with diverse groups of people.]

In your working life, you:

• Have demonstrable experience of analysing technical content to support policy development, such as in government, think tanks, or public affairs roles.
• Demonstrate an effective working knowledge of the UK policy and/or parliamentary process and have an interest in how government policy can be influenced to hasten progress towards a healthy climate.
• Are able to easily and effectively describe how you approach policy analysis, your research methods, and show us how you approach summarising complex topics into easily understandable information for our stakeholders
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex and technical issues in clear, persuasive language
• Some exposure to and comfort with scientific or technical material, whether through education or professional experience, is preferred.
• Have a passion to quickly gain expertise in carbon removal policy.

Carbon Gap is dedicated to broadening opportunities for groups that are underrepresented in the climate and carbon removal spaces, and to building an inclusive team where people of different backgrounds can thrive. We strongly encourage applications from people who do not see themselves represented in the current climate ecosystem, and if you feel able to do so, please mention this in your covering letter, and we will guarantee you an interview.

You don't need to meet all the requirements in order to be considered and we know you might need to grow into the role. As long as you feel like this is the right role for you, please don’t hesitate to apply.
