Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has shared on X that he is working on creating an app called Bitchat.
The app will operate over Bluetooth and does not require internet connection.
According to reports, the app will not require central servers, phone numbers or emails.
Dorsey announced on Sunday that the beta version is currently live on TestFlight.
Dorsey wrote on X: "My weekend project to learn about bluetooth mesh networks, relays and store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things."
He further said: " Bitchat: bluetooth mesh chat...IRC vibes."
Due to the technical limitations of Bluetooth, this kind of app generally only works at a range of around 100 meters, making it useful for situations like finding friends at a busy music festival where cell service is spotty.
Dorsey claims that his app has an extended range, relaying messages through peers to extend up to 300 meters, or 984 feet, reported Tech Crunch.
