Technical Operations Manager, Iraq

The starting salary package for this position is £93,700 GBP / approx. $126,323 USD including all allowances**

About MAG:

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

About the Iraq programme:

Following decades of conflict, Iraq is heavily contaminated with landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO). The recent regional crisis has added to the scale of this problem. MAG has been working in Iraq since 1992 and has expanded into new areas over the last few years. We currently have approximately 700 national staff and 100 teams operating in 7 areas across Northern Iraq, in both the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and Federal Iraq. By clearing hazardous areas, MAG has enabled new schools, roads and hospitals to be built, opened up vital trade routes and allowed communities to use their farming land in safety, giving them greater food security and an escape from poverty. Our work over the last 4 years in particular has supported the surveying and clearance of contaminated land, as well as delivering life-saving risk education for those who have fled the violence and are now seeking to return. The HQ office for the programme is in Erbil, KRI, with 6 operational bases in various locations and a support office in Baghdad.

About the role:

This role is a great opportunity to take a leading role in MAG’s life-saving work. As the senior technical representative in country, the Technical Operations Manager role is responsible for leading and safely managing all mine clearance and EOD operations, as well as leading teams of national and international staff. Working closely with and reporting to the Country Director, you will provide high quality technical input into proposals and reports, liaise with donors, and government agencies. As a member of the programme’s Senior Management Team, you will need to demonstrate considerable experience of working strategically and ensuring the quality and efficiency of MAG’s clearance work. This role plays an integral part in collaborative working with support services departments and ensuring that all staff are made aware of wider programme issues, developments and achievements within MAG. The role is based in Erbil, with frequent travel in the country.

About you:

In addition to a recognisable technical qualification and extensive experience of planning and implementing efficient clearance operations in challenging environments, you will have excellent people leadership and project management skills with the ability to communicate, coordinate, design, manage and report on activities simultaneously. You will have the ability to contribute technical knowledge to proposals and reports, as well as the ability to plan and organise.
You will have excellent representation and communication skills and the ability to build capacity of teams, and to establish and maintain productive partnerships with donors and partners. Understanding of difficult security contexts is crucial and previous experience of working in a senior technical position within a similar organisation is essential.

You will be able to demonstrate a manner that is appropriate to the cultural context and able to uphold our safeguarding standards. **

This is a demanding yet highly rewarding position that will be suited to a highly motivated, solution-focused and flexible leader.
