The Israel Defence Forces has said it is examining the reliability of a photograph which appears to show a soldier destroying the statue of Jesus Christ in Lebanon.

IDF Spokesman Nadav Shoshani shared the image on X and wrote: "The IDF is currently examining the reliability of the photograph. If this is indeed a real, recent picture, these actions do not align with the IDF's values and the behavior expected of IDF soldiers."

He said the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

He said: "The incident will be investigated thoroughly and in depth, and if necessary, steps will be taken in accordance with the findings."

In the image that has now gone viral on the social media, a soldier could be seen using a sledgehammer to strike the head of a crucified statue of Jesus Christ.

Ayman Odeh, a Palestinian member of the Israeli parliament, reacted to the image and wrote on X, " We'll wait to hear the police spokesperson claim that 'the soldier felt threatened by Jesus'."

On his Facebook page, Ahmad Tibi, another Palestinian member of the Knesset, said: "By the way, the same soldier is the one who posted his photo smashing the statue of Jesus Christ on his Instagram account. The American administration has demanded action for this heinous act. We repeat and repeat this work not alone but repeated against religious symbols of all religions. But, what about killing innocents?"

Israeli Minister reacts

Meanwhile, Israeli Minister Gideon Saar condemned the incident as 'serious and shameful' matter.

The Minister wrote on X: "Damaging a Christian religious symbol at the hands of a soldier from the Defense Army in southern Lebanon is a serious and shameful matter. The Defense Army's statement was commended for condemning the incident and initiating an investigation into the matter. I am confident that the necessary strict measures will be taken against whoever committed this reprehensible act."

"This shameful act is entirely at odds with our values. Israel is a state that respects the various religions and their sacred symbols, and it strives to instill values of tolerance and respect among followers of different faiths. We apologize for this incident and for any harm caused to the feelings of Christians," he said.

Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war in early March after Tehran-backed Hezbollah targeted Israel with rockets, supporting Iran.

Israel responded by launching massive strikes on Lebanon and invading the southern part of the nation.

The two countries reached a ceasefire recently.
