Whitehall sources told The Times of India that the UK government “condemns the murders of Dipu Chandra Das and Amrit Mondal and extends its condolences to their families and friends.”

Westminster sources said the UK remained committed to safeguarding religious freedoms in Bangladesh. “The UK is committed to defending freedom of religion or belief. We have raised the importance of protecting minorities with Bangladesh, including during Baroness Chapman’s visit to the country last month,” the sources said.

With general elections approaching in Bangladesh, the sources added that London had stressed the need for calm. “We have underlined the importance of the current election campaign being peaceful. At the same time, we continue to support Bangladesh in protecting civic and human rights and in tackling corruption,” they said.

Third Hindu killed

Meanwhile, a third member of the Hindu community was killed in Bangladesh amid the recent unrest. A 40-year-old Hindu man was shot dead inside a garment factory in Mymensingh district, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred around 7:00 pm at Sultana Sweaters Limited, a subsidiary of the Labib Group, located in the Mehrabari area of Bhaluka, Bangladeshi news portal Khaborwala reported.

The deceased has been identified as Bajendra Biswas. Police said the alleged shooter, Noman Mia, has been apprehended and claimed that the firearm discharged accidentally.

According to police, Biswas was deployed at the factory as a member of the Ansar, a uniformed auxiliary force in Bangladesh. The factory reportedly had 20 Ansar personnel assigned for security duties.

Md Zahidul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Bhaluka Model Police Station, confirmed the incident and said police responded swiftly and took the accused into custody. Investigators are examining whether the shooting was accidental or if there was any underlying motive. The victim’s body has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The latest killing comes amid a surge in attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi. In recent weeks, two Hindu youths were killed in separate incidents that triggered widespread condemnation.

In one case, Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly lynched by a mob in Mymensingh district, and his body was set on fire. In another incident, Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was reportedly beaten to death by local residents following allegations of extortion.

These incidents have raised serious concerns over law and order and the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
