Ahead of Kim-Trump meet, senior N Korea leader dine with Pompeo in New York

New York City: Preparations for the historic meeting between Kim Jong-un of North Korea and US President Donald Trump are truly underway as a senior leader from the Asian country flew to the USA to dine with the latter's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York, reports said on Thursday.

General Kim Yong-chol became the senior most North Korean to set foot in the USA in 20 years.

Yong-chol is considered as the right-hand man of Kim Jong-un.

Until recently, Kim Jong-un was blacklisted by the US authorities, but recent developments have seen it lifted.

The meeting, which was cancelled by Trump citing hostilities from Pyongyang, has since been reinstated and is expected to take place on the earlier planned date, June 12, in Singapore.

However, US is yet to budge from its stand of total denuclearisation in the Korean peninsula.

"Looking forward to meeting with Kim Yong Chol in New York to discuss @Potus potential summit with Chairman Kim. We are committed to the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula @StateDept," a tweet from Pompeo read, ahead of the meeting with Yong-chol.

Both Pompeo and Yong-chol will have a second meeting sometime later on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reached the North Korean capital to hold a talk with its leaders in order to comprehend the situation.

According to reports, Lavrov has also reached out to Pompeo over the phone.

Yong-chol's visit to the USA is expected to cheer pro-talks supporters, who had earlier cried foul against Trump after the latter single-handedly stalled months' of progress between America and North Korea.
