The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 28, 2025.

According to an NDTV report, the attackers allegedly stuffed cloth into one of the rooms of a house and set it on fire, causing the blaze to spread rapidly. Family members said they woke up to find their house engulfed in flames and initially found themselves trapped, as the doors had been locked from the outside.

All eight members of the two affected families managed to escape by cutting through tin sheets and bamboo fencing, NDTV reported. However, their homes and belongings were completely destroyed in the fire.

Mohammad Manzur Ahmed Siddiqui, Superintendent of Police of Pirojpur, visited the scene and assured the victims that the incident would be investigated promptly, the report said.

A video of the fire has since gone viral on social media, showing local residents attempting to bring the flames under control.

Rising attacks on Hindus

Bangladesh has witnessed a sharp rise in attacks on members of the Hindu community in recent weeks following the ouster of the Hasina-led government. The incidents have raised serious concerns over law and order and the safety of religious minorities.

In recent days, two Hindu youths were lynched to death in separate incidents, drawing widespread condemnation.

In Mymensingh district, a Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was allegedly lynched by an angry mob, after which his body was set on fire. While investigations into his killing are ongoing, another lynching was reported shortly thereafter, intensifying fears over mob violence.

The latest victim, Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was allegedly beaten to death by local residents following accusations of extortion, according to police.

Police account of Mondal’s death

Police said they rushed to the scene after receiving emergency information and found Mondal in critical condition, The Daily Star reported. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later sent to the Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Mondal’s killing occurred less than a week after the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, who was allegedly accused of blasphemy before being assaulted by a mob and set on fire—an incident that drew strong criticism both within Bangladesh and internationally, renewing scrutiny over the safety of religious minorities in the country.
