World Premiere Screening of Film Queen Nanny. Una Clarke, former New York City Council member, at the world premiere screening of “Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroons Chieftainess", a film by Roy T. Anderson. The event was organized by the Remember Slavery Programme, in partnership with the Permanent Missions of Jamaica and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations. The film is a one-hour documentary film that unearths and examines Nanny of the Maroons, Jamaica’s sole female national hero and one of the most celebrated, but least recognized, heroines in the resistance history of the New World. 70th Anniversary UN Day Concert in New York. To mark the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, a commemorative concert was held on Friday, 23 October 2015, in the UN General Assembly Hall. Organized by the UN Department of Public Information in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations and the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), the concert featured the KBS Traditional Music Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Lee Jun-ho and accompanied by Kim Hae-sook, renowned master of the twelve-string gayageum. Special guest performers included UN Messenger of Peace and pianist Lang Lang; K-pop duo Davichi; and the Harlem Gospel Choir. The KBS Traditional Music Orchestra performs at the 2015 UN Day concert. UN Headquarters Lights Up in Blue to Celebrate 70th Anniversary. UN Headquarters in New York lit up blue for two nights, beginning 23 October when the annual UN Day concert was held, and concluding on 24 October, celebrated as UN Day since 1948. Starting in New Zealand, and moving in a wave around the world, some 300 sites around the world lit themselves blue to join the global commemoration, including iconic landmarks such as Australia's Sydney Opera House to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt and from the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro to the Empire State Building in New York. Other sites included Russia's Hermitage Museum, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Edinburgh Castle and Central Hall Westminster in the United Kingdom, Table Mountain in South Africa, Japan's SkyTree Tower and the Alhambra in Spain, among many others. Gabarrón Art Installation Unveiled in Central Park on UN Day. “Enlightened Universeâ€, a monumental art installation by Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón was unveiled on Saturday, 24 October, at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park in New York City in celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. The commemorative work of art depicts seventy life-size figures joined in hand around a central globe, creating a human chain of global citizenship, respect for nature and shared responsibility. The sphere measures 6,371 millimetres in diameter to correspond to the Earth’s average radius of 6,371 kilometres and the figures represent the seventy years of the United Nations.
