Kampala: Authorities in Uganda have indefinitely banned over 50 civic groups for alleged non-compliance with regulations, causing trouble for hundreds of thousands of people who directly benefit from the organisations’ activities.
Due to the suspensions, agencies ranging from rights watchdogs to women’s groups, have been forced to halt their activities, reported Al Jazeera
The names announced on Friday by the government’s Non-Governmental Organization Bureau include prominent rights group Chapter Four Uganda and election observer group CCEDU among 15 organizations facing indefinite suspensions.
It said the measures were necessitated in response to the groups’ failure to work in accordance with several regulations, including functioning with expired permits, failing to submit accounts, or failing to register with the authorities.
