Balda abduction: Ecuador court orders arrest of former President Rafael Correa

Quito: A court in Ecuador has ordered the arrest of former President Rafael Correa, after the latter was found guilty of involvement in an attempted kidnapping of a political rival, reports said.

The aforementioned incident took place in 2012 and involves the kidnapping of former minister Fernando Balda.

Balda was kidnapped in Bogota, Colombia, where he took refuge after tensions with Correa escalated.

Later, he accused Correa of planning his abduction.

Correa was the President of the Andean nation for 10 years, from 2007 to 2017. He presently lives with his wife in Belgium.

Reading out the order, Judge Daniella Camacho said that Correa failed to comply with the court order and did not aid in the investigations. She said that the Interpol has been alerted in order to get Correa extradited.

Correa, however, has said that it is a witch hunt against him, run by his friend turned foe, former deputy and the current President Lenín Moreno.
