Context

Building Markets is an award-winning non-profit organization that creates jobs and encourages economic growth in crisis-affected economies by connecting competitive local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to new opportunities. Through its approach, the organization has built a network of more than 26,000 verified SMEs, assisted them in winning over $1.3 billion in contracts, and helped create over 70,000 jobs in Afghanistan, Haiti, Liberia, Mozambique, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. Building Markets is headquartered in New York City. For more information, visit www.buildingmarkets.org.

Building Markets is operating in Yangon since 2012 and has profiled more than 3,500 businesses in Myanmar, helping hundreds of local SMEs to find new clients and get new contracts.

In 2018, with funding from Coca-Cola Foundation, Building Markets doubled-down on the waste management and recycling sector, which presents a serious environmental problem as well as an economic opportunity for Myanmar. Since launch, the program has generated indirect and direct outcomes for 137 SMEs including enhancing business practices, increasing the amount of recyclable items collected, diverting recyclable material from landfills, enabling access to markets, improving health and safety conditions, and engaging communities to become stakeholders in the reduction of waste.

Following the successful completion of the first phase of this program, Building Markets is currently focused on expanding its work to new sectors, locations and services, all with a view to reduce waste, keep recyclable material out of landfills, while supporting the businesses and entrepreneurs who make that happen.

We are growing our small team, and are hiring for several new positions that will help us achieve some ambitious goals. If you are passionate about supporting small businesses, care about the planet and are hungry to join a close-knit team who enjoy working together to tackle some pretty big problems, this is the job for you!
