London: One in 50 people in private households in England are estimated to be infected by COVID-19 in the week that ended on Jan 2, media reports said.
The Office for National Statistics figures were released on Tuesday, as the number of new cases of people in the UK testing positive for Covid-19 topped 60,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic, reports The Guardian.
The latest ONS infection survey suggests 1,122,000 people in private households in England had the coronavirus between 27 December and 2 January. The total does not include people staying in hospitals, care homes or other institutional settings, the newspaper reported.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday imposed a new lockdown in England and Scotland in view of the surge in the number of COVID cases.
Everyone in England must stay at home except for permitted reasons during a new coronavirus lockdown which is likely expected to last until mid-February, according to Downing Street, a BBC report said.
The new rules said that all schools and colleges will by and large remained closed to most pupils and will switch to remote learning from Tuesday.
Johnson warned that the coming weeks would be the "hardest yet" amid the surge in the number of cases and patient numbers.
