New UN appointments announced for political affairs, civil aviation
New York, Mar 13 (JEN): The United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has appointed Fang Liu of China to head up the Montreal-based agency, while Secretary-GeneralBan Ki-moon has appointed Miroslav Jenca of Slovakia as Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs.

Liu, whose three-year term begins on 1 August 2015, is the first woman to be appointedSecretary General of the UN specialized agency for civil aviation. 

 
She has held numerous positions with ICAO, most recently as the Director of the Bureau of Administration and Services, as well as with the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

Jenca succeeds Jens Toyberg-Frandzen of Denmark, who has served in the Department of Political Affairs in an ad interim role since last November. His responsibilities will include overseeing the divisions dealing with the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the Middle East and West Asia, as well as the Decolonization Unit and the Division for Palestinian Rights.

Prior to this appointment, Jenca served as the Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, a post he held since 2008.

Also on Friday, it was announced that Kandeh Yumkella is stepping down as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All and CEO of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative as of July 2015.

“It has not been an easy decision to end my 19-year career serving humanity under the auspices of the UN system, including as Director General of UNIDO. But I believe it is now time for me to go home to serve my people in Sierra Leone,” Yumkella said in a news release.
