Red Scarves now march in Paris against Yellow Vest movement

Paris: A new group calling themselves Red Scarves held marches in Paris on Sunday to demonstrate against anti-government agitations over the past months by protesters who have come to be known as Yellow Vests.

The Red Scarves are demanding an end to the violent Yellow Vest movement.

The Yellow Vest movement began late last year to protest against a fuel tax hike imposed by the government. It later turned to a broader movement against the government.

According to the BBC, Paris saw the worst street violence since 1968 as part of the movement. TV footage showed the protesters clashing with the police and damaging public monuments that triggered a counter movement in the country.

Reports said more than 10,000 people participated in Sunday's march in Paris.

Ahead of Sunday's rally in Paris, the Red Scarves released a joint statement with like-minded groups.

"We denounce the insurrectional climate installed by the Yellow Vests. We also reject the threats and constant verbal abuse (aimed at non-yellow vests)," they announced in a joint manifesto as reported by BBC.

Latest Yellow Vest protest:

On Saturday, Yellow Vest protesters once again took to the streets of France but this time the number of participants was lower than their previous march.

Across France, about 69,000 people took part in the 11th consecutive weekend of Yellow Vest protests, the interior ministry said. That is about 15,000 fewer than last weekend, reported BBC.
