Afghanistan blast: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemns attack on Sikh community

New Delhi: Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, condoled the loss of lives in the blast which rocked Afghanistan's Jalalabad area on Sunday.

Modi described the incident as an attack on 'Afghanistan's multicultural fabric'.

The Indian Prime Minister tweeted: "We strongly condemn the terror attacks in Afghanistan yesterday. They are an attack on Afghanistan's multicultural fabric. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. India stands ready to assist the Afghanistan government in this sad hour."

Nineteen people, including 17 from the minority Sikh community, were confirmed dead and another 21, including seven Sikhs, were injured as a blast hit the Afghan city on Sunday at around 3:50pm.

The blast reportedly targeted a vehicle carrying passengers from the minority community.

Apart from Modi, India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also condoled the loss of lives in the blast.

"My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the terror attack in Jalalabad city of Afghanistan. We are with them in this hour of tragedy. I am meeting their relatives today at 6 pm in JN Bhavan," she tweeted.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
