Colombo: The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved 3-hour power cuts for July 18 and 19 in the country which is battling a tough economic crisis for the past several months, media reports said on Sunday.
Accordingly, 1 hour and 40 minutes of power shedding will be imposed during the daytime and 1 hour and 20 minutes during the night for the ABCDEFGHIJKLPQRSTUVW groups, reports Daily Mirror.
Two hours and 30 minutes of power shedding will be imposed for Group CC from 6.00 am to 8.30 am while 3-hour power cuts for groups MNOXYZ from 5.30 am to 8.30 am, the newspaper reported.
Sri Lanka’s multiple crises have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic which saw the collapse of the crucial tourism industry, which provides foreign currency for imported fuel and medical supplies, and rocked by the supply chain crisis precipitated by the Ukraine war.
Some 22 per cent of the population are food insecure and in need of assistance said the World Food Programme last month, and the UN has launched a joint Humanitarian Needs and Priorities Plan, requesting more than $47 million to aid around 1.7 million of the worst impacted.
