Algiers/JEN: After cutting all diplomatic ties with Morocco over alleged "provocative and hostile activities", Algeria's supreme security council on Wednesday decided to 'immediately close' its airspace for all Moroccan civil and military flights, escalating the decade-old conflict between the neighbours.
According to the Algerian presidency, Algeria's President, National Defense Minister and supreme commander of the country's armed forces, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, chaired a meeting of the Supreme Security Council where it was decided to close the country's airspace immediately to all civil and military flights of Morocco as well as all aircraft bearing Moroccan registration numbers.
Relations between Algeria and Morocco have witnessed many ups and downs since the 1960s– starting with the border dispute between the two neighbouring countries in 1963, to a conflict in the 1970s sparked by Algeria's support for the Polisario Front, which sought to secede the Sahara region from Morocco.Local media reported quoting Morocco's aviation officials that Algeria's decision to close its airspace for Moroccan aviation will affect as many as 15 flights per week.
