Beirut/JEN: After 13 months without a government, Lebanon on Friday announced the formation of a new cabinet amid an ongoing economic crisis, Associated Press (AP) reported quoting the Lebanese presidency.

The new government will be headed by billionaire businessman Najib MIkati, the report said.

According to the Lebanese presidency, Lebanon President Michel Aoun signed a decree with Prime Minister-designate Najib MIkati in presence of Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri in the presidential palace in Baabda.

The new Lebanon Prime Minister, Najib MIkati, in his maiden speech as the head of the newly formed cabinet, said, "I hope that we will rise with this government and will stop the current collapse, and restore Lebanon to its pride and prosperity."

"I promise the Lebanese that I will contact all international bodies to secure the simplest matters of life, and we will work with a national principle," Najib Mlkati said.

"We are not with a group against another group, and I will not miss an opportunity to knock on the doors of the Arab world," the new Lebanese PM added. "We must deliver what has been cut off, and Lebanon belongs to this Arab world and is proud of this command."

There was no fully empowered government in Lebanon since the catastrophic explosion rocked Beirut port on Aug 4 last year (2020) which forced the resignation of the then Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his cabinet.

Rival political groups' disagreement over the formation of a new government in Lebanon had produced a fierce gridlock for the last 13 months, sliding the country deeper into a financial crisis and poverty.
