350.org is looking for an experienced and collaborative strategy-builder to shape the direction of our campaigning and organising in Europe. This is a full-time permanent role, based anywhere in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, or the UK.

About 350.org

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. 350.org works hard to organize in a new way—everywhere at once, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. We want to be a laboratory for the best ways to strengthen the climate movement and catalyse transformation around the world. The values that guide and drive our work are listed here.

350.org is an equal opportunity employer. 350.org strives to be an inclusive and collaborative group of people who bring a variety of approaches to the work we do. We’re committed to the principles of justice, and we try to build a safe workplace where everyone is treated fairly and enjoys working together. We value new perspectives, ideas of all sorts, and different ways of working. Diverse perspectives and experiences improve the way 350.org carries out our work – including what we decide to work on and how creatively/effectively we do that. We do our best to make staff positions accessible to all potential team members, regardless of race, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, assigned gender, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation or identity, religion or creed, veteran status, marital or parental status, and genetic information. We also strive to include team members in communities most impacted by climate change or impacted by other kinds of environmental, social, and economic injustice.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We recognise that the climate crisis strikes unequally, and hits the hardest among working class people, women, non-binary and gender non-conforming people, trans people, black people, indigenous people, people of colour, people living with disability, people from the Global South, LGBTQIA people, people with mental health conditions. We believe those communities must be centred in the work we do, and we also note that they are currently underrepresented in the climate justice movement and want to do what we can to correct this. We therefore strongly encourage applications from people with those identities or who are members of other communities impacted disproportionally by environmental, social, and economic injustice.

About the Associate Director for Europe Campaigns and Organising

We are embarking on a new organisational strategy that is shifting 350’s stance to not just campaign against fossil fuels, but also for the solutions to the climate crisis, with a focus on an alternative energy system that is not only powered entirely by renewable energy, but that provides affordability and access as well, and that is controlled and owned by and for people, not corporate profit. The energy crisis in Europe gives us a chance to rapidly shift public support towards this vision, and to consider what European governments can do at home, but also in recognition of the role Europe needs to plays in supporting the energy transition in countries who’ve done the least to contribute to the climate crisis.

As we re-hire for this role in our team, we want to maintain its strong focus to bring the different strands of our national and regional campaigning and organising work together for greater impact under this new direction and emphasise even further how our work needs to be rooted in a larger vision of a broad, equitable and powerful European climate justice movement. Ultimately, we need strong organising to build power in order to win campaigns in the long-term.

These Are The Main Responsibilities of the Role:

Develop and lead a regional strategic framework (shared theory of change, goals, demands, story, key tactics, principles, monitoring & evaluation), ensuring that national strategies in France, Germany, and the UK, as well as regional-level campaigning, organising, digital and media communications work are connected and pull in the same direction, in alignment with our organisational strategy and in collaboration with other teams at 350
Provide to country teams in France, Germany and the UK support, guidance and accountability for their campaigning and organising work
Help build and maintain our network of external relationships and collaborations with people and groups in the climate justice movement and allied movements, who are key to the success of our work in the region, including through in-person meetings and events across Europe
Represent 350 in person in movement spaces across the region, to build the connections and alignment that build power towards our vision
Lead on development and project management of global and regional projects, campaigns and mobilisation, as need arises
Set up and chair project teams or working groups on areas of our strategy that require closer coordination within the regional team and across teams in the organisation
Act as deputy team lead, occasionally filling in for the Europe Regional Director when required in their regional and global responsibilities

Required Qualifications

Experience in developing and leading campaigns that build power through grassroots organising
A track record of leadership in groups, organisations, campaigns or projects
Vision and experience of transnational, European campaigning, mobilising and organising work, across different political and cultural contexts
Expertise around working with marginalised groups and identities, and applying principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion to campaigning, organising and management
Ability and willingness to travel in Europe several times a year
Good knowledge of English (spoken and written)

Desired (but not required) Qualifications

Understanding of and lived or professional experience around issues of energy justice
Experience in playing a convening, facilitation or otherwise active role in coalitions and networks
Creativity in developing and leading actions, particularly non-violent / disobedient ones
Expertise in organising actions that use art as a form of protest
Knowledge of French and/or German

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.

Position Type: Full-time (36h per week, or lower depending on national legislation)
