Job description

Climate Focus is looking for an experienced and dynamic Senior Consultant to join our growing team to lead projects related to forestry, agroforestry, and agriculture operations – with a strong focus on operations in Colombia and Latin America more broadly.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to work with a pioneering team to implement nature-based solutions to climate change through forest restoration and climate-smart production of timber and agricultural commodities such as cocoa, coffee, nuts, and seeds. In this position, the selected candidate will lead activities including, but not limited to:

• Assess land suitability to production systems including timber, cocoa, coffee, and other crops.
• Design optimal production systems and land management plans.
• Design implementation plans for natural forest restoration.
• Develop comprehensive operational plans including all aspects of land management from infrastructure development and planting through to maintenance, harvesting, post-harvest storage and processing.
• Produce detailed operating budgets and cost forecasts.
• Estimate annual production volumes for different production systems.
• Design and lead forest inventories and soil sampling.
• Estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential of different production and restoration models.
• Design and manage monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems for land-use based projects
• Support the development of project descriptions and monitoring reports required for project registration and issuance of carbon credits
• Collaborate closely with colleagues on research regarding production systems and markets, data analysis, results interpretation, and drafting of reports.
• Build and manage client and partner relationships.
• Support the expansion of Climate Focus’s project pipeline.

Selection criteria

The successful candidate will have a strong academic background in forestry, agronomy, and/or agroforestry, combined with hands-on experience in managing operations and teams on the ground. We are looking for a strong team player - familiar and comfortable working in a range of environments and geographies with a diverse group of clients, colleagues, and partners. The successful candidate will have:

• Five-ten years of professional experience managing and designing forestry, agroforestry, and agricultural operations in Latin America, with a preference for experience in Colombia.
• Advanced degree in forestry, agronomy, and/or agroforestry. Degree in business or economics would be an additional asset.
• Demonstrated experience in the development of forest restoration plan and production systems - experience with harvest and post-harvest storage and processing would be an additional asset.
• Demonstrated experience carrying our forest inventories and soil sampling – experience with estimating GHG mitigation potential and carbon credit generation would be an additional asset.
• Experience with managing Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
• Strong planning capabilities including operational, financial, and human resource planning.
• Clear business sense and experience with the development of business plans.
• Strong team leadership and motivational skills including of non-technical staff in rural settings.
• Excellent organizational skills, with experience in managing complex projects, personal time management, coordination with project partners and clients.
• Spoken and written fluency in Spanish and English language.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
• Ability to work well within teams across disciplines and cultures.
• Ability to work independently under clear but limited supervision.
• Permission to work in Colombia.
