Role: Oximetry Clinical Lead

Time commitment: 60% FTE (alternative time commitments will be considered)

Timeframe: One year contract (May 2023 - April 2024)

Background

Lifebox is a global nonprofit founded to tackle the crisis of unsafe surgery. By investing in tools, training, and partnerships, we address the critical gaps in surgical systems to make surgery and anesthesia safer worldwide. Lifebox’s work focuses on three core areas: anesthesia safety, surgical teamwork, and reducing surgical infection. Since 2011, Lifebox has worked in over 116 countries, trained more than 12,000 healthcare providers, and made 60 million surgeries safer. www.lifebox.org.

When Lifebox was founded, 77,000 operating rooms around the world lacked a pulse oximeter which is the only piece of equipment included on the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. To date, we have distributed more than 35,000 pulse oximeters to healthcare providers alongside training to improve anesthesia safety. As part of the Smile Train-Lifebox Safe Surgery and Anesthesia Initiative, Lifebox and Smile Train will distribute 11,000 pulse oximeters over the next three years, to healthcare workers across 20 countries – making surgery safer for 14 million patients.

Purpose of the role

The Oximetry Clinical Lead will be responsible for the clinical content and quality of Lifebox’s oximetry related research and implementation work, globally.

They will play a lead role in three ongoing research workstreams, related to:

• Needs assessments;
• The impact of the introduction of oximeters at facilities;
• Understanding, measuring and mitigating the impact of pulse oximeter inaccuracy in darker pigmented skin

They will work directly with the Technology, Training and Innovation and clinical teams to create an integrated and impact-oriented program of work which is relevant to the realities of anaesthesia providers working in LMICs.

Key responsibilities include:

• Ensuring the quality, content and relevance of all oximetry-related work, including research, training and distribution;
• Advising on the identification and selection of in-country research project ideas, sites and leads;
• Guiding one or more Fellows, particularly on research around pulse oximeter inaccuracy in dark skin pigmentation;
• Delivering lectures, training sessions and workshops for partners and staff where relevant;
• Overseeing the refinement of existing program materials, and approving changes;
• Acting as a global focal point for technical/clinical issues related to the global implementation of oximetry work, troubleshooting and providing expert advice;
• Together with program and clinical team members, developing Lifebox’s oximetry work, drawing out lessons learned and making recommendations for future implementation strategy.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

• Experienced anesthesia clinician (at least two years of service), with extensive knowledge and understanding of patient monitoring best practices and global standards;
• Experience of collaborative research, ideally as PI;
• Strong communication skills, with experience of teaching/coaching/training and motivating others;
• Demonstrated interest in and understanding of key research/implementation and technical questions around pulse oximetry inaccuracy due to various factors including dark skin pigmentation;
• Strong IT skills, with knowledge of Google Workspace and other applications;
• Flexibility and adaptability;
• Ability to communicate in spoken and written English with a high degree of fluency;
• Excellent time management skills, self-motivated with the ability to work on own initiative.

Desirable

• Experience of using data capture and analysis software such as DHIS2, SPSS, Stata or other statistical packages
• Experience of developing and implementing Quality Improvement projects
• Qualitative and/or quantitative research skills
• Additional language skills, particularly French, Spanish or Amharic

TIME COMMITMENT

This is a part-time role with an estimated time commitment of 3 days per week.

Minimum one year commitment, with potential for further extension.

LOCATION

Most work will be conducted remotely, so location is flexible; however, candidates based in LMICs are strongly encouraged to apply.
