Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine main Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books. RFA is seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to support its media, government, and organizational outreach as a Communications Specialist. The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to handle multiple tasks in a professional manner, and take initiative in identifying potential opportunities to raise RFA’s profile with targeted groups and audiences. The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Vice President of Communications and External Relations, and support all communications needs, including tracking outside media requests; developing contact databases; drafting press materials; developing and implementing social media and digital marketing strategies; and researching issues related to media, organizational, and government outreach. Ideal candidates would have language fluency or proficiency in one of RFA’s languages (especially Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, or Burmese).

Responsibilities Include:

• Drafting press releases, social media posts, and other related materials.
• Tracking and researching policy issues important to RFA and target markets (in China, North Korea and SE Asia).
• Monitoring media coverage.
• Building and updating targeted media and influencer lists and databases.
• Tracking and prioritizing outside requests from media, researchers, and Congress.
• Developing content and scheduling social media posts.
• Creating weekly promotional newsletters that highlight RFA’s value and work.
• Coordinating media appearances for RFA leadership/personnel and staffing them.
• Compiling highlights and information to be used in external/promotional materials.
• Event planning (external and internal).
• Assisting with internal and corporate communications needs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, or related field preferred.
• Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines under pressure.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Strong attention to detail and follow through, solid organizational skills, and adept at multi-tasking and prioritizing work.
• Experience driving engagement on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
• Ability to build and maintain relationships, work collaboratively with others.
• Knowledge of and keen interest in human rights, press freedom, and Asian geo-politics.
• Basic graphic design skills, with proficiency in photo and video editing software (Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro) a plus.
• Fluency in one of RFA’s languages (Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese, Burmese, Khmer, Lao) a plus.
