Corporate Accountability Lab (CAL) brings together design thinking and human rights expertise to protect people and the planet from corporate abuse. CAL is a young, growing nonprofit, ready to scale up its operations, research, and outreach. CAL is looking for a team member who is comfortable with a diversity of tasks, self-initiates, and enjoys working in a collaborative and creative environment.

The Operations and Finance Associate will support the co-directors in key areas including: finances and human resources, communications and development, office management and research tasks as needed. The Associate will maintain the accounting books, support the budgeting process, manage operational systems, and oversee the maintenance of the IT systems. CAL is a highly participatory and exploratory work environment to ensure that innovation, risk taking, and creativity thrives. To that end, the CAL office has many interns, fellows and research partners. The Associate would be key to making CAL a welcoming space, provide guidance and oversight to members of the legal design team, and ensure the policies and procedures of the organization are implemented in a fair and consistent manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A strong commitment to human rights, corporate accountability and/or environmental protection. Experience in nonprofit organizations preferred.

At least 2 years relevant experience in finance, operations, communications and/or development. Nonprofit finance/bookkeeping experience preferred.

A demonstrated ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders, partners, and advocates from diverse backgrounds.

Excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills; willingness to help, follow through, and attention to detail.

Flexibility and initiative; ability to work in a fast-paced office environment; analytical and creative problem-solving skills required.

Experience using accounting software.

Experience and comfort with technology, including learning new platforms.

A sense of humor, flexibility, and willingness to engage in uncomfortable conversations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Budgets & Finance

Carry out financial aspects of the organization, including the processing of payables, receivables, credit card payments, and reimbursements.

Produce quarterly financial reports to the co-directors, and biannual financial reports to the Board.

Keep meticulous financial records to remain in fiscal and legal compliance.

Support the annual, independent financial audit, oversee the U.S. 990 tax form filing, and otherwise support the work of the outside accountant.

Liaise with the Board of Directors’ Audit and Finance Committees.

Design grant budget proposals and reports for domestic and international donors in coordination with program staff and the fundraising department.

Monitor the organization’s bank accounts in regards to cash flow and the moving around of operating funds as needed.

Ensure compliance of existing and new grants and contracts.

Human Resources & Office Administration

Participate in all human resources functions including recruitment & hiring, trainings, implementing the compensation policy, benefits management, and training new staff in the creation and tracking of budgets.

Continually reviewing staffing needs of the organization and creatively devising solutions that fit within budgetary constraints.

Control office management and administration including managing tenant/landlord/vendor relations and contracts, purchasing office equipment, and troubleshooting IT issues.

Solve problems and take on new projects to improve the administration of the office.

Other tasks as assigned by the co-directors.

Communications

Monitor CAL social media presence

Draft press releases as needed

Keep website content fresh and accessible

Oversee graphic design and video editing projects

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $40,000-50,000, based on experience. Health covered 50% by employer. Thirty-five hour work week. All federal holidays plus any relevant religious holidays. Unlimited PTO (minimum two weeks vacation annually). The office is closed between Christmas and New Year’s.
