Afghanistan: Taliban suffer heavy casualties as 73 militants killed in clashes with armed forces

Kabul: In a series of operations by armed and air forces, at least 73 Taliban militants were killed and 17 others injured in several parts of Afghanistan on Friday.

According to the country's Ministry of Defence, three Taliban commanders were also killed during the raids.

In Badakhshan province of the country, 11 militants, including a major commander of the Taliban, were killed during an airstrike.

The militants were preparing an attack on Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) positions in Nosai district.

In Uruzgan, five militants were killed and six others were wounded after they attacked ANDSF positions in Gizab district. A large amount of weapons and ammunition were also destroyed.

The Afghan National Army (ANA) killed 39 militants and injured five others in Panjwae and Zherai districts of Kandahar.

"They attacked ANA positions and were killed and wounded during reciprocal attacks of ANA. Also 13 IEDs which were placed by TB on public roads in the districts were discovered," a part of MoD tweet read.

At least nine militants, including a Taliban commander, were killed and six others were wounded in Nawa, Nadali and Nahresaraj districts of Helmand province by ANA. The forces also discovered and defused 30 IEDs which were placed by the militants on roads in these districts.

Airstrike led to the death of four Taliban militants in Nadali district of Helmand province after they attacked ANDSF positions. A large amount of weapons and ammunition belonging to the Taliban were also destroyed.

A Taliban commander and four of his aides were killed and a large amount of their weapons and ammunition were destroyed in Charkh district of Logar province.

"They had prepared to attack #ANDSF positions when they were targeted by #ANA," said a Ministry of Defence tweet.
