China’s military said on Monday it had carried out beach landing and assault drills in the province directly across the sea from Taiwan, an incident which occurred amid growing conflicts between the two regions.

Taiwan has complained of stepped-up military and political pressure from Beijing to force it to accept Chinese rule, including massed air force incursions into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone, reported South China Morning Post.

The official People’s Liberation Army Daily newspaper, in a brief report on its Weibo microblogging account, said the drills had been carried out “in recent days” in the southern part of Fujian province, the newspaper reported.

President Tsai Ing-wen has targeted China in her defiant speech and said will not bow to pressure from Beijing and will defend its democratic way of life.

She made the remark in her speech to mark Taiwan's National Day to give a fitting reply to China's President Xi Jinping's comment to "fulfil reunification".

In her speech on Sunday, she said Taiwan was "standing on democracy's first line of defence", reports BBC.

She said the island would not "act rashly" but would bolster its defences to "ensure that nobody can force Taiwan to take the path China has laid out for us".

That path, she said, offered "neither a free and democratic way of life for Taiwan nor sovereignty" for its 23 million people.

"The more we achieve, the greater the pressure we face from China," she was quoted as saying by BBC.

Taiwan considers itself as a sovereign nation while China sees it as a breakaway province.
