Team Summary

The U.S. administration’s crackdown on the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers has raised awareness among health professionals about the importance of advocating for systemic change. This is a critical time to advocate for asylum protections. For more than 30 years, PHR’s Asylum Network has supported survivors of torture and ill-treatment who seek refuge in the United States. PHR’s Asylum Network comprises more than 1,700 members nationwide and 20 medical school asylum clinics, who volunteer their time to provide pro bono forensic medical and psychological evaluations that can corroborate an asylum seeker’s claim of having suffered violence and persecution.

Position Summary

Reporting to the asylum officer and coordinating with the asylum associate, we seek an asylum senior coordinator to join our team. This is an ideal opportunity for someone launching a career in the human rights or immigration fields who possesses at least three years’ experience in a professional setting.

As the asylum coordinator, you will be a part of building a movement of health professionals to advocate for immigrants and asylum seekers, creatively coming up with new ideas to mobilize our network to re-imagine the asylum and immigration system and to galvanize clinicians to speak out in their communities and spheres of influence. Your role involves diverse tasks towards this goal, including strategic planning, project management, logistics, communications, research, and advocacy.

You will draw on PHR’s asylum case management and training work to develop innovative outreach initiatives to engage our network of health professionals, design plans for direct action, and build a movement with a network of physicians and health professionals from around the United States – all in the service of systemic change.

This position will be located in our New York City headquarters, working remotely during the pandemic.

Responsibilities:

• Refine and implement PHR’s strategies to cultivate engagement of health professionals and achieve impact on the asylum system in the United States, alongside the asylum officer and asylum associate;
• Help to develop and deliver strong messaging that resonates with health professionals and helps strategically advance PHR’s asylum program goals;
• Leverage Salesforce, social media, and other digital tools to grow and mobilize our base of supporters, build political will, and advance organization-wide goals, including fund-raising, in collaboration with colleagues responsible for digital and social media work;
• Take initiative to draft compelling resources that build a welcoming activist community and activate and grow PHR’s health professional network, including toolkits, webinars, and newsletters;
• Serve as a liaison between programmatic staff, volunteer clinicians, and external legal partners, academic institutions, and medical associations alongside the asylum officer and asylum associate;
• Coordinate with the finance department to manage activity budgets and track programmatic expenditures, including handling purchase orders and administering reimbursements as needed;
• Draft blog posts, research reports, and other communications content and give media interviews related to the program as needed;
• Work with the development team to provide subject matter input to inform grant proposals;
• Assist in the hiring and supervision of interns and other staff as needed;
• When the pandemic allows travel, manage a new detention monitoring project which will mobilize existing and new clinicians (including PHR student chapters, asylum clinics, asylum network members and PHR board members) to visit detention facilities in their own communities to document rights violations and health concerns of people in detention;
• Carry out all responsibilities in a timely manner to a high standard and consistent with the mission of PHR and the strategy of the program department.

Skills and Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:

• Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in a relevant field desirable;
• At least three to five years’ relevant work experience;
• Passion and commitment to human rights and a demonstrated passion for PHR’s mission;
• Interest in and knowledge of immigrant rights, asylum law, and U.S. immigration and border enforcement institutions and policies desirable;
• Demonstrated commitment to cultural competency, comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences;
• Spanish language skills desirable;
• Experience in community organizing and movement building desirable;
• Excellent research, writing, editing, and communications skills;
• Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through a must;
• Energetic self-starter and proven ability to work effectively under deadlines;
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and professionally with multiple stakeholders and organizations;
• An ability to translate evidence-based research and knowledge into activism and advocacy;
• Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, maturity, creativity, flexibility, patience, and a good sense of humor;
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint required;
• Experience with Salesforce and other similar databases highly desirable.

This is a full-time position located in New York, NY. candidates must be authorized to work in the United States and be currently working in the United States. Salary is commensurate with experience.
