Addis Ababa/JEN: Rebels from the Tigray region killed at least 120 civilians, mostly farmers, over two days at a village in Amhara region in northern Ethiopia, Reuters reported citing local authorities.

Rebellious forces from Tigray had carried out the massacre in a village six miles (10 km) from the Ethiopian town of Dabat on Sept 1 and 2, Reuters said in a report quoting Dabat's local administrator, Sewnet Wubalem, and spokesperson of the nearby city of Gondar, Chalachew Dagnew.

Reuters said that Tigrayan forces' spokesperson had not commented immediately on the first report of such a large-scale massacre by the rebellious forces since seizing territory in Amhara.

Tens of thousands of Amhara residents reportedly fled the region after the Tigrayan forces advanced.

Reuters reported quoting a local official that the massacre was carried out during a 'short presence' of the Tigrayan rebels in the area and it was under the control of Ethiopian federal army.

Meanwhile, AFP reported citing local health officials that at least 125 bodies had been reported so far in the Amhara village.

The war between Ethiopia's federal troops and rebellious forces loyal to Tigray region's controller, Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), broke out 10 months ago, and since then, thousands have been killed and over two million people fled their homes as the conflict spread in July from Tigray into its neighbouring Amhara and Afar regions.

Reuters reported that a large area in northern Ethiopia has been hit by the war.
