Armed criminals block road, kill eight police officials during ambush in India's Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: At least eight cops, including a senior official, were killed in an encounter with criminals in northern India's Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The incident took place during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in a village after the team arrived to carry out a raid on Vikas Dubey's house.

Dubey is an infamous history sheeter with 60 cases registered against his name.

According to reports, Dubey and his henchmen stationed an earthmover on the road to prevent the police team from reaching his hideout.

The situation exacerbated for the unsuspecting cops after the criminals started firing bullets at them from the roof-top. The ambush left eight people dead and injured four others.

The deceased have been identified by their ranks.

Three sub-inspectors, four constables and deputy superintendent of police, Devendra Mishra, died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

According to police officials, teams from neighbouring districts of the state have been called to start a joint operation and nab the criminals.

Meanwhile, Dubey and his men were able to evade the arrest and flee the spot.

He was previously arrested for allegedly murdering a local lawmaker, but was released due to lack of evidence against him, in 2001.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered strict action against the accused and has also sought report in the matter.
