Position Description: President/CEO, GBCHealth

Organization Overview

GBCHealth is a nonprofit alliance of companies and nongovernmental organizations that engages the private sector to help address the world’s highest priority unmet health needs, with particular focus on developing and emerging countries. Founded in 2001 as the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, GBCHealth is at the forefront of supporting and leading cross-sector collaboration between companies and health agencies, and works closely with the United Nations, governments, multilateral organizations and civil society. As evidenced during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the GBCHealth team reacts quickly and efficiently to trends in health and development, connecting the right partners through coalitions, communication, advocacy and events to ensure that productive conversations are taking place to move issues closer to actions and solutions.

A focus on partnerships and fostering relationships, building solutions to development challenges:
GBCHealth has strong relationships and partnerships with some of the most important stakeholders in the global health space. From corporations at the cutting edge of new innovations to combat infectious diseases to large multilateral institutions and local partners, our partners look to us to build a neutral space to come together and push important policy agendas forward. GBCHealth serves as the focal point for a number of private sector groups, and is working to help companies navigate in the COVID-19 era. Our work with the Global Fund Private Sector Constituency over the last 14 years is one of the cornerstones of GBCHealth’s global engagement on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, providing opportunities to stimulate global and local cross-sector partnerships to influence policy and drive action. GBCHealth also serves as the backbone organization for the Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa (CAMA), a coalition of companies committed to malaria eradication in sub-Saharan Africa.

A global vision with regional roots : Following strategic steps to expand the reach of GBCHealth to makea meaningful impact on Africa, the continent with the highest disease burden and greatest health challenges, GBCHealth co- founded the African Business Coalition for Health (ABCHealth) in partnership with Nigerian-based Aliko Dangote Foundation. While GBCHealth is at the epicenter of global health through its presence in New York City and Geneva, our regional staff located in West Africa allow us to work with local partners on the ground and offer stakeholders critical perspectives and connections from the countries they are aiming to serve. Launching, and now partnering with, ABCHealth means that we have a wide- ranging reach across the continent of Africa and can help local companies to amplify their work at an international level. This area of strategic focus is and will continue to be a foundation for strengthened relevance, impact and growth for GBCHealth in the years ahead.

Engaging the private sector in meaningful ways: GBCHealth was ahead of the curve when it came toengaging corporations in critical conversations around their role as a conduit of good health and wellbeing for their employees, greater community, and the world at large. We continue to play an integral role in translating the work and importance of businesses to stakeholders in other sectors who may need help understanding the importance of private sector input in the work they do, and for businesses who want support in navigating the global health landscape, ensuring meaningful and integrated contributions and solutions. GBCHealth is partnering with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on the Demographic Dividend to encourage important partnerships in health, empowerment, education and employment to reduce vulnerability and support young people and women in west and central Africa, brokering country-level partnerships with government ministries and others.

COVID-19, pandemics and business engagement: The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the world inunprecedented ways, with serious implications for global public health programs. COVID-19 threatens our collective progress towards the eradication of HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria. Severe disruptions to routine healthcare services due to lockdowns, diversion of healthcare workforce to the COVID -19 response, and disruption of travel and supply chains have an immediate impact on our collective ability to prevent, diagnose and treat these three infectious diseases. The private sector has been an indispensable advocate, partner and stakeholder in addressing these epidemics. Businesses are instrumental in addressing COVID-19 in a myriad of ways, including raising funds and supporting national responses, investing directly in primary healthcare, taking critical steps to protect their employees and communities, and leveraging their capabilities in communications, manufacturing and supply of health products - including innovation in new treatments and vaccines – to address the pandemic. Given our nearly two decades of work on these communicable diseases, we believe it is important to draw attention to the escalating issues around prevention and treatment, and to highlight the work that is being done by the private sector through cross-sector partnerships to help mitigate increasing risks. The current pandemic only reinforces the strong business case for private sector engagement in health. We see opportunities to help the business community navigate within this new landscape, helping them to prepare and protect their employees, their communities and their businesses, within this pandemic and from the threat of future pandemics.
