Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine main Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books. RFA is currently seeking a creative and innovative Web Editor to help publish and maintain content for the website of its Lao news service. This position will be based in RFA’s Washington, DC, offices.

Responsibilities Include

• Selecting, promoting, and creatively packaging RFA’s Lao broadcasts and webcasts on the Web.
• Measuring and analyzing user traffic and feedback, and adapting Web content accordingly.
• Contributing to on-going Web development with innovative features and solutions.
• Programming high-level interactive features.
• Staying current with developments in Internet best practices and technology.
• Executing a variety of digital imaging functions such as image editing and photo and video formatting, editing, and publishing.
• Proofreading and correcting scripts and ensuring that content complies with the journalistic style of RFA’s Web site.
• Coordinating, overseeing, and providing constructive guidance to other Lao Service website contributors.
• Actively using social media to seek permission from citizen journalists for using their pictures and videos.
• Shooting video as needed
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Creative team player with news writing skills and solid experience in Web technologies who works efficiently under deadlines.
• Fluency in Lao, proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Experience (or substantial training) in Photoshop, video editing applications (WMM, Premiere and Flash), and HTML coding.
• Demonstrated ability to manage projects, work independently, and accomplish day-to-day responsibilities with minimum direction.
• Knowledge and understanding of current political, economic and social conditions in Laos and surrounding countries.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative in interpreting and applying RFA Web policies, procedures, and themes.
• Prior journalism or writing experience preferred, as is experience working with content management systems such as or similar to Dreamweaver.
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office Suite.
• Adept in the use of social media
