Hindu village attacked in Bangladesh, police pin blame on Jamaat-e-Islami

Dhaka, Nov 13 (JEN): A Hindu village in Muslim majority Bangladesh was burned down by an angry mob of 20,000 rioters, who said that a Hindu person had degraded Prophet Muhammad on a post that went viral on Facebook.

The incident took place in Thakurbari village, located in Rangpur Sadar region of Bangladesh on Friday.

By the time the cops had arrived at the scene, at least 30 houses were set alight by the mob seeking vengeance.

"The rumour was that one Titu Roy, originally from Thakurpara but currently living in Narayanganj, put up a Facebook post defaming Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) a few days ago," a report by Dhaka Tribune read.

Meanwhile, a person was killed and another five sustained grave injuries as police opened fire and lobbed tear gas shell to disperse the crowd.

The deceased person has been identified as Hamidul Islam.

Local officials said the agitation was caused by Jamaat-e-Islami and added that affected families will receive aides from the government.

Police have also made 53 arrests.

"Jamaat tried to fuel unrest as elections are nearing," Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman told reporters on Saturday.

"Jamaat-Shibir carried out the attacks led by them. They are the instigators of the arson attacks, lootings of Hindu homes," he added.

A witness told the daily that "thousands of protesters from six nearby villages banded together after the Jumma prayers, and attacked the Hindu neighbourhood."

Dulali Rani, a victim was quoted as saying, "A mob came to our neighbourhood on Friday afternoon and started ransacking our home without any provocation. They even took our cattle."

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj later tweeted on Sunday, "We have received a detailed report of Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Bangladesh authorities have assured him that compensation will be paid to affected persons to rebuild their houses and adequate security will be provided."
