Legal Adviser
As part of its Strategic Goals (2016-2019), Amnesty International is implementing a two-year project to ensure that victims of crimes under international law in Africa obtain justice, truth and reparations. The project aims to strengthen criminal justice mechanisms in Africa through promoting domestic accountability, effective regional and hybrid accountability mechanisms, and defending the integrity of international justice norms and mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court (ICC).


ABOUT THE ROLE
The Legal Adviser is a funded post and is part of the core project team that leads on delivery of the project within the broader Amnesty International's Strategic Goals (2016-2019). Working under direct supervision of Africa Director, Research and Advocacy, and working with the Amnesty International's Africa Regional Advocacy Team and International Justice Team (IJ Team), the Legal Advisor contributes on analysis, advocacy and strategic litigation initiatives in Africa. The Africa Advocacy Team is Amnesty International's focal point for engagement and advocacy with Africa's regional and sub-regional intergovernmental organisations and regional human rights bodies. The International Justice Team leads on AI's work on international justice matters, focusing on standard-setting, accountability for crimes under international law, strengthening of domestic and international accountability legal frameworks and accountability mechanisms.

ABOUT YOU:
As qualified lawyer you will bring your expert knowledge of and experience in the application of international law, including international human rights law, humanitarian law and international criminal law. You will have outstanding knowledge and experience of one of the following areas: criminal law and criminal procedure, state and non-state actors responsibility, and extraterritorial jurisdiction and responsibility under international law.

With extensive knowledge and experience of working with the African human rights mechanisms and jurisprudence, you will have excellent ability to analyse accurately complex legal issues and evaluate situations in short, medium and long term. You will be a strategic thinker, who can manage people and resources, plan and prioritise work, cooperate internally and externally with others. You will have the communication, presentation and advocacy skills needed to represent Amnesty externally, along with the ability to explain complex legal concepts simply and accurately to a variety of audience. An advanced communicator, you will have essential proficiency in English and French language.
