Pakistan Law Minister says former PM Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam will be arrested at airport

Lahore: Pakistan's federal law and information minister Syed Ali Zafar has said that ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, who are convicted in the Avenfield Apartments corruption case, will be arrested on arrival in the country.

Nawaz Sharif and his daughter are currently in London.

“The law enforcement agencies will arrest Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz on airport, if they did not get bail before landing in Pakistan,” Zafar was quoted as saying by Dawn News.

He said the verdict against Sharif and his daughter would not affect the holding of general elections on July 25.

“General elections will be held on time and that too in a free, fair and transparent manner,” he said.

In a major blow to Nawaz Sharif ahead of the general elections, a Pakistani court on Friday handed over the former prime minister of the country a 10-year jail term over his family’s purchase of apartments in upscale London.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court declared the verdict after several delays.

Apart from Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif too received a seven-year sentence.

The former PM's son-in-law Safdar Awan was given a one-year sentence by the court.

The court has also imposed a fine of 8 million pounds, to be paid by Nawaz.
